Charity Up! at IADT Dragons Den:

Kick Start !!

As we are part of a business course in Dun laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology we got to take part in the Creative Dragons Den which IADT runs. We were presenting the idea of an application for martial artists and had some great feedback :)

The three formidable judges on the day were Sean Gallagher, Lisa Cunningham and Tom Shinkwin who were great at listening and providing amazing feedback.

With six groups in the competition each group had five minutes to give your pitch. As you can see above Prince who has been doing Taekwondo for 15 years and Paul for 15 minutes demonstrated a few exercises for the crowd. Sadly we didn't win but we enjoyed every second and were glad when a fellow classmate won
But don't worry guys we are going to be doing a entrepreneurship boot camp here in IADT in May for being finalists which promises to be great fun !!!

Fundraising:

Charity Up!

Here at Charity Up! we believe that fundraising is one of the most rewarding and important part of a charity. Its can make the difference between your idea failing due to lack of support or most of the times funding.

We have had charities come to us before mumbling shame faced that they have very little money for fundraising due to other costs. However fundraising doesn't have to some big event it can be small, easy and cheap but reap big rewards.

The top tips on cheap fundraising:
  •  Don't be afraid of approaching people - these can be shops in the local town ,churches, colleges most of the time these people want to help and if they cant donate money they can donate either their time or people.

  • Communicate with these people often don't just go to them when you need something - this may sound odd or confusing but it can be as simple as emailing them or personally sending a Thank You letter for their support, mention how the resources was used this will encourage them to donate again.

  • Study up on that charity law - There are different requirements, duties and responsibilities you have to know before you hit the pavement looking for funds. For example - permits and licenses.

  • Keep it simple -  I have seen events where on the night the fundraising manager is pulling their hair out as the drinks haven't arrived or the food is late and they spend the rest of the night disappearing to fix one problem after another. My advice would be if your a beginner keep it simple - make a closed raffle and get your local town to donate items, do a movie night, speed dating or even just a coffee morning. All these things can be done with local help and efficiently which in turn improves your skills to plan those big events. :)
So overall fundraising isn't about making the biggest party you can to raise money and if it fails its not the end of the world. Look at it like this you can learn something new from the event be it networking, selling techniques, or even just discovering what people think about your mission.

But the most important part of fundraising is HAVE FUN !

So wear that silly hat, put on some tunes and mingle people :)

Coffee Morning at the National Rehabilitation Hospital:

Charity Up!

One of our customers the National Rehabilitation Hospital had a coffee morning recently which was a huge success. 😊

All money raised was donated to the Valentine Fund:

What is the Valentine’s Fund?

Most patients, Adults & Children, who attend the NRH have had a sudden life altering illness or accident. Many are younger adults who are at an earlier stage in their life cycle in terms of having young children, dependent parents and high mortgages.  A considerable number of  working patients are unable to return to their previous job and are now dependent on Social Protection payments.  Parents of children attending the NRH are generally struggling to keep their financial situation on track while one parent has to stop working to be in the hospital with their sick child.  Given that the NRH is a national service, families often struggle to pay the costs to travel to and from the NRH and to pay for hidden costs of disability such as higher medical and heating bills and extra child care costs.  The economic situation has also meant that more families were struggling financially prior to the injury and that employers are less able to support in terms of paid leave.
The Funds raised so far have provided an opportunity for the social work department in the NRH to be responsive to individual and family needs in exceptional circumstances where no other resources may be accessible to them. As such, funds raised have directly benefited patients and families in very personal and practical ways.
The funds are used exclusively for the benefit of patients and their families within the NRH. The Social Work Department allocates funding on the basis of assessed need and inability to source funding through other statutory and voluntary bodies.

Why we do it?

Charity Up!

We run a wide range of events from launch parties to Pub quizzes to even the odd lunch time stall in local business parks. The events we run are catered to each charities needs and what they feel is important to them. Our belief is that no two charities are the same - this means no two of our events will be the same. :)

Why we do these events: We believe that every charity should have the right to promote themselves and their fundraising tools without paying a arm and leg - sounds simple right?

However promotional companies have to cover their costs when organising these events and sometimes as charities cant afford these fees they get left out in the cold....
And this is where we come in - Charity Up! has experience in a wide range of charities but also how to organise and promote events but the best bit is we don't charge more then charities can afford. So they can spend that money on more important things.

Happy charities means happy us :)

National Rehabilitation Hospital Cookbook Launch Party

NRH Event:

As one of our customers the National Rehabilitation Hospital came to us to promote their new fundraising tool. The NRH cookbook:

They have our bronze package so they received a free consultation on how to market and promote their book eventually deciding on a launch party in the hospital. We at Charity Up! organised their event and it was a huge success :)
We had Starbucks providing the party with hot chocolate and some pastries as well as the Dun Laoghaire Gazette taking some launch party pictures with a mention in the paper. Us here from Charity Up! were on hand that night to assist. On that night alone over 2000 Euro was made on cookbook sales.

    Who are we?

    Charity Up!

We are a new social enterprise that works with local charities in the area and all across Dublin. We provide professional marketing and selling skills packages to charities who wish to promote themselves or their fundraising products.

The social enterprise consists of four students who are in their third year a Bachelor degree in Applied Entrepreneurship in Dun Laoghaire's Institute of Art, Design and Technology. They are Carol Thornton, Prince Bosco Hakiza , Andrew Cronin and Paul Higgins.
All the members in our enterprise have volunteered in a number of different charities around Dublin - Saint Vincent's De Paul, Amnesty International and Aware to name a few.

We hold promotional events for example launch parties to showcase a new fundraising product or charity. We provide these charities with the assistance they need in planning, organising, marketing and financing these events.

We have contacts in other businesses for example Starbucks who can provide refreshments for these events in return for promotional pictures.
